In this video I will show you how to extract terpenes from Cannabis or Hemp using Steam Distillation. You just need some simple glassware you can find on Amazon. There is a shopping list in the description below. This is a much cheaper method compared to C02 extraction but is less effective. I am starting with a jar of some homegrown, that was fresh frozen immediately after harvest without any curing, but you can use properly dried flower as well. The first step is get your material into the receiving flask, then fill your boiling flask with distilled water and place it onto a heating apparatus. For this video I am using some vegetable oil being heated on a hotplate. Apply tubing to the condenser and attach it to a pump in a bucket of ice water. Be sure to pump the water into the lowest point and out the highest point on the condenser so you don’t have any trapped air bubbles. Then set up the rest of the glassware, be sure to use kek clamps to secure the joints. Finally, once everything is secure pour some distilled water into the separatory funnel until it overflows. Once the water starts to boil and create steam, you should see some distillate start to condense, once it starts to pour over or your thermostat stops raising in temperature, start a 20 minute timer. You will see a layer of Terpene oil float above the water in the separatory funnel. Once the water level raises in the funnel it automatically pours out the water and preserves the terpenes inside. After the 20 minutes is complete, you can turn off the heat and allow the glassware to cool while removing the separatory funnel to collect the terpenes. Then pour out the water and collect the terpenes. If you have a drop of water stuck in the terpenes that is okay it will be forced into a droplet at the bottom of the collection container.
