Bulgaria has become the first country in the EU to officially authorise a CBD distribution company to sell openly on the European market. According to Kannaway a subsidiary of the publicly traded cannabis company Medical Marijuana Inc, they have been issued with a Free Sale Certificate to produce hemp-derived CBD products. They are now certified to comply fully with relevant requirements of the Law on Foodstuffs of Republic of Bulgaria and of Regulation (EC) No 852/2004 of European Parliament and the Council on the hygiene of foodstuffs. This is the first of its kind for an EU country, so what does this mean for CBD companies all across Europe including Ireland? Currently, the situation is murky with regards to the novel food issue and it is being lobbied by the UK Cannabis Trade Association. Jonas Duclos CEO of Switzerland based CBD company JKB research stated, “Hopefully this will be successful in setting a positive precedent and show a possible way forward for CBD and cannabis within legality for the rest of the European Union, something that has actually been overdue,” he added, mentioning that the example of Switzerland, a non EU country where CBD products are sold freely.
