Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal imbalance that affects millions of women globally. Its core symptoms include: Irregular or absent menstrual cycles, Elevated androgens (male hormones like testosterone), Ovarian dysfunction, Skin concerns, such as acne or excess facial hair, and Insulin resistance, which disrupts hormone regulation and ovarian function. Insulin resistance is considered a central feature of PCOS. When the body becomes less responsive to insulin, the pancreas produces more of it, which can overstimulate the ovaries and lead to increased production of androgens. This hormonal imbalance results in irregular cycles, excess hair growth (hirsutism), and ovulatory dysfunction. How Berberine Works for PCOS Improves Insulin Sensitivity The most well-documented benefit of berberine for PCOS is its ability to enhance insulin sensitivity. It activates an enzyme called AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), which plays a central role in regulating how the body uses energy. Activating AMPK helps: Improve cellular glucose uptake, Lower fasting insulin levels, Reduce the liverโ€™s production of glucose, Stabilize post-meal blood sugar levels. In studies, berberine has performed as well as metformin, a prescription medication commonly used for insulin resistance in PCOS. Unlike metformin, berberine tends to cause fewer digestive side effects for many women. Reduces Androgen Levels PCOS is often characterized by elevated levels of testosterone and other androgens, which contribute to symptoms like acne, oily skin, and hirsutism (unwanted facial or body hair). Clinical studies have shown that berberine can help lower total testosterone and DHEA-S levels, which contributes to a more balanced hormonal environment. By lowering excess androgens, berberine may help: Clear acne-prone skin, Reduce unwanted hair growth, and Normalize ovulatory function. #berberine
